Gordon had started second and held off a late charge from Earnhardt, who was hunting for momentum after an 11-race stretch without a top-five finish. The victory was Gordon's 10th of the 1996 season, the first of three consecutive double-digit win seasons, and helped extend his lead in the championship standings. For a track that had hosted NASCAR since 1949, it was a fitting final points race.
