For the 1981 season opener at Riverside International Raceway, Petty Enterprises made an unusual call: to qualify the No. 42 for NASCAR's Winner's Circle incentive program, Kyle Petty took the wheel of his father's No. 43, while Richard Petty drove Kyle's No. 42 Buick Regal. Richard finished fifth in the swapped car; Kyle brought the No. 43 home 20th. Both returned to their signature numbers for the remainder of the season, with Kyle logging 10 top-10 finishes in his first full NASCAR Cup Series campaign. This officially licensed Lionel Racing diecast commemorates the one-afternoon Riverside swap.
