Michael McDowell drives the No. 71 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Spire Motorsports in the NASCAR Cup Series. The Glendale, Arizona native is in his second season with Spire after spending seven years at Front Row Motorsports.
McDowell's path to Cup was unconventional. He started racing BMX bicycles at age three, then moved through karting to win World Karting Association and back-to-back International Kart Federation championships. He competed in Formula Renault, Champ Car, and the Rolex Sports Car Series before turning to stock cars in 2006. His Cup debut came in 2008 with Michael Waltrip Racing, after which he spent years bouncing between smaller teams.
The veteran's career changed on Valentine's Day 2021. Driving for FRM in his 358th Cup start, McDowell led the final lap of the Daytona 500 to capture stock car racing's biggest race. His second Cup win came on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in August 2023. McDowell also has an Xfinity Series win at Road America in 2016 and earned a career-best six poles during the 2024 season.
Through the early stages of 2026, McDowell sits as Spire's highest-running entry in the points standings. He continues part-time Truck Series duties for the team and co-owns the Trackhouse Motorplex karting facility north of Charlotte with Trackhouse Racing's Justin Marks. McDowell lives in North Carolina with his wife Jami and their five children.
