Legacy Motor Club is a Statesville, North Carolina based NASCAR team competing in the Cup Series with Toyota. Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jimmie Johnson holds majority ownership, with minority stakes held by Knighthead Capital Management, Maury Gallagher, Richard Petty, and Darius Rucker.
The organization carries one of the deepest lineages in NASCAR, having evolved from Richard Petty Motorsports. Maury Gallagher acquired a majority interest in 2021, leading to the 2022 rebrand as Petty GMS Motorsports following a merger with GMS Racing. Erik Jones won the team's first Cup race under the new structure at the Southern 500 in 2022. Johnson joined as a co-owner in 2023, with the organization rebranding again to Legacy Motor Club. The team transitioned from Chevrolet to Toyota in 2024, beginning a new chapter with manufacturer support from Toyota Racing Development.
For the 2026 Cup Series season, Legacy Motor Club fields two full-time entries: John Hunter Nemechek in the No. 42 and Jones in the No. 43, the historic number Petty drove during his career. Johnson continues as a part-time competitor in the No. 84 and is expected to expand the team to a three-car operation for 2027. Johnson finished third in the 2025 Daytona 500 in his part-time return.
Petty serves as Club Ambassador, lending continuity from his Hall of Fame era to the modern operation. The team also competed in the Extreme E electric off-road series in 2024 with Johnson driving.
