Helio Castroneves is a Brazilian motorsport veteran whose lone NASCAR Cup Series start came at the 2025 Daytona 500, driving the No. 91 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing's PROJECT91 program. The São Paulo native, born May 10, 1975, is one of the most accomplished drivers in IndyCar history and has competed in NASCAR's biggest race as a one-off appearance.
Castroneves built his career in open-wheel and sports car racing. He is one of four drivers to win the Indianapolis 500 four times, with victories in 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2021. He owns more than 30 IndyCar wins and was runner-up in the championship four times. He is a three-time winner of the Rolex 24 at Daytona (2021, 2022, 2023) and won the 2020 IMSA SportsCar Championship overall title with Team Penske. His earlier stock car experience came in 16 IROC starts from 2002 to 2005.
His 2025 Daytona 500 attempt was a years-long project realized through Trackhouse founder Justin Marks. Castroneves used a newly created world-class provisional to start the race despite a difficult Speedweeks that included multiple practice and Duel incidents. He finished 39th after being involved in a multi-car accident.
Crew chief Darian Grubb led the effort with Wendy's as primary sponsor. Castroneves's PROJECT91 entry made him the only Indy 500 winner since Jacques Villeneuve in 2022 to attempt the Daytona 500. He has expressed interest in a return attempt and continues to race in IndyCar and sports car competition.
